oUR COMMITTMENT

The YWCA of Aotearoa New Zealand has a commitment to being an advocate on issues that affect women and youth.

The YWCA has been part of every major change for women since the Dunedin YWCA was established in 1878 as the first YWCA of the Southern Hemisphere. Countless women leaders over the last century owe their leadership training to the YWCA of Aotearoa-New Zealand.

Some of the issues we have been involved with in the past have been the Prostitution Law Reform, Civil Union and Gay and  Lesbian rights, and Foreshore and Seabed.

White Ribbon Day PosterWe are currently on the CID NGO HIV&AIDS Advocacy Group, and are part of the steering committee organising the national White Ribbon Day Campaign on 25 November.  We have a strong commitment to fostering young women's leadership and see women as leaders as key to social change.  This commitment is brought to life through such programmes as Future Leaders and our Y-Dub Clubs.  As a world movement we are also part of key campaigns through the World YWCA.  It is through these camapigns that we focus on important issues such as the alarming rise of HIV&AIDS in the Pacific Region, and in particular amongst women throughout world.
